Default 2003 3.8 XLS Wheel bearing

Was wondering if anyone knew if the wheel bearings on the full size montero needed to be pressed out and back in when being replaced? Just noticed some intermittent grinding noises lately and figured it was rotors/pads. Replaced both today and still get the noise coming from the front left side. When I had it up on stands I did get very minimal play in the assembly when rocking the tire back and forth but didn't seem like enough to make the kind of noise I'm getting. Thanks!

You do not need to press in the bearing. It comes pre-assembled into a hub - which is the part you'll be replacing. 4 bolts holding hub to knuckle assembly. Some of the old hubs have hard time coming out of the knuckle assembly - binds up due to some corrosion. I found that I had to disconnect both upper and lower ball joints to remove the entire hub/knuckle assembly and then press out the old hub. The new hub usually slides in without any issues.

replacing a hub for a shagged bearing??!

If youre careful you can (but 'technically' shouldnt,) hammer bearings into place.
And before the boo-hoo brigade start posting, ive put hundreds of thousands of kms on wheel bearings done that way, not to mention industrial motors and line gear.

Thanks for the info. The assembly is not that expensive so trying to band-aid the old one doesn't really appeal to me. Also have seen that this issue could be related to the free wheel valve, but the same grinding noise occurs when I place it into 4WD.

In the Gen III design bearing and hub designed to be replaced together. There is no need to try to get the bearing off by itself - not worth the trouble. I'm not saying its not possible, just not worth it. As far as 4WD solenoid issue, it doesn't sound like this is what you got. When solenoid goes bad, front axle is trying to engage when it shouldn't - thus grinding noise when in 2wd and goes away when in 4wd.

Well, good news is that Big O Tire got me out the door for $250 to do the entire thing.
Bad news....this just happened. Someone is going to have a case of the Monday's after answering my phone call tomorrow.

Is that one of the bolts holding the hub to the knuckle assembly?
