In the process of replacing fuel injectors on my 2005 Montero/Pajero Ltd. Before installing the manifold, I decided to test them by cranking the ignition. Several of the fuel injectors are leaking from the opening in the side of the injector, not from any seals. Can someone tell me what that opening is and what it's for and why the injectors would be leaking there... and are the injectors defective or is this some kind of relief valve and there's an issue with the pressure or something? These are new injectors purchased on ebay and I assume they were tested at the factory. I've attached a photo of the injectors with the opening in the side of the injector housing. That looks like defective injectors. The only place the fuel is supposed to come out from is the very tip of the injector. You can't test them at home, since the "business end" is not visible once installed in the manifold. I wonder if someone tried a DIY "referbishing" of these injectors and instead damaged/broke them. I believe that part of the injector is sort of a lock that holds all pieces together. Perhaps they forgot to put back some internal seal.
More important question - why are you replacing your OEM injectors? Do you have any reason to suspect that they are not working at correctly or out of spec?

Yes, I suspected these were defective but they were listed as "new" on ebay so I assumed that they were not remanufactured and if they were that they would have been properly tested. As for why I didn't just change the seals and clean the originals which could be oem but i'm not 100% sure...is that I didn't realize the original leak was a seal. I assumed the injector was cracked as I've never replaced injectors before. But if I had to do it over again, I would have just purchased a seal kit. I think I will take the seals from the new injectors and put those on the originals and see if that fixes the issue. I'll keep you posted.

 

Using the new seals on old injectors sounds like a reasonable approach. How many miles on the old injectors?

 

I really have no idea since I've only owned the vehicle for about 5 years. I'll keep yo posted on what the solution was.

About 195K miles. Btw, we did take the seals from the "new" injectors and put them on the old and no leaks.

That hole isn’t a relief port, fuel should never leak from there. If it is, the injectors are defective. Good injectors never leak from the body. Since these came from eBay, they’re likely cheap aftermarket or poor remans. Best fix is to return them and get OEM Mitsubishi/Denso or a trusted reman set. Don’t run them as is, it’s unsafe and can damage the engine.
