96 Montero LS crankshaft

New user here with a tech question. I'm considering buying a 96 Montero LS 4X4 that has a "knock" from the engine. Believe it to be a rod bearing. Question is: does anyone have experience replacing the rod bearings from underside without having to replace the crankshaft or rods.
I was able to do this on an old Volvo because the crankshaft was hard enough steel and engine shut off quickly enough that no damage was done to the crankshaft itself. I simply polished the crankshaft with emory cloth, replaced the bearings, put it all back together and the Volvo is still on the road 100k miles later. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It all depends on how long the engine continued to drive in this condition. Chances are the rod may be out of round, which would result in failure again down the road. Further you're hoping this is the probelm when it may not be.
