97 Montero Sport Need Help! ASAP
Ok, it started off when i replaced my turn signal switch, i unplugged the batter since i had to take off the steering wheel. After I replaced it i plugged the battery back in, and started the car, it starts.. tested the switches and it was good.
The problem is After I tried to drive the Car, I came to stop sign and as i let go of the gas, and the RPM started dropping, the car cut off. RPM completely dropped to zero and I would have to start it back up, but when I did that, It would cut right back off unless i keep the RPM higher than 800-1000RPM. If i do not do that it would just cut right back off on me. I brought it to a shop and got a tune up, I thought it worked cause it was not acting up after i got the car back until a week later, it started doing it again. Then went away, and then yesterday i tried to drive the car after replacing my brakes, and I noticed the CEL light came on so I drove to Advance auto to use their OBD-II diagnostic tool, and It threw the "P0120" Throttle/Position sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Malfuntion. I cleared it to see if it would come back and it didn't. I remember a while back this code came on but went away that same day. What is going on here. Please someone help me. I Have a baby due on tuesday and I would really like to have this fixed before then. |
Remove the TPS connector and inspect it. If it needs cleaning, spray a bit of electrical contact cleaner and reconnect it. See if that does anything before you go any further.

ok, according the repair manual i was to take the voltages from pins 1 and 4 and they should fall between 0.4-1.0 volts, and im getting a reading of -5.

Is this from the equipment side connector (on the TPS) or the harness? You need an ohmmeter to measure resistance between pins 1 and 4, which should fall between 3.5-6.5 kΩ.
You might also want to connect one pointer to pin 1 and the other to pin 3 as well, then open the throttle from idle to WOT slowly. The resistance should change smoothly, proportionate to the opening angle of the throttle plate. If it doesn't, or fall outside 3.5-6.5 kilohms, replace the TPS. If you have to replace it, don't forget to adjust the new one. |
