Bought a 2001 Montero Sport XLS...

New to this forum but not to Mitsubishi. I bought this SUV because it was cheap and needed some maintenance. It has 148,000 miles on it and is in good condition but the previous owner never did any repairs.
So far I have to replace the rear cam seals, spark plugs, wires, valve covers gaskets, timing belt and waterpump. It runs fine but won't drive it until these repairs are done. I plan to replace all fluids also.
Is there anything else I should check or replace?
Oh, service manual is on the way...
Thanks

When you're doing the timing belt, you might think about replacing the tensioner and pulleys. Are you replacing the drive belt and thermostat?
I'd flush the cooling system while you're at it and check the rad. Be sure to use MM AFT in the transmission.
Welcome

Thanks Mr Z.
What is the drive belt? I have it all apart now and yes, I'm replacing everything that touches the timing belt included the front cam seals and crankshaft seal. ALl OEM parts going in.

I must say this engine is more difficult to work on than my VR-4. I can pull the intake and replace the plugs in an hour. :D

I'm taking my time and doing a little every night. My wife lost her garage space for awhile, lol.

The FSM refers to the fan/alternator belt as the drive belt.
The plugs and wires are a PITA to service- the intake and throttle body assembly must be removed. Be sure to use the factory specified plugs, they last- (the full sized Montero calls for iridium tipped plugs, not sure about the Sport.)

I bought the Denso iridium plugs and have the valve covers off and the rear cam o-rings in. Changing the valve seals too as long as it's ripped this far apart. Thanks for the help.
