"Brake" & "Battery" Warning Lights

The brake and battery warning lights have started to come on intermittently. One day one or both will come on, the next day they won't.

The owner's manual says to take them to the dealer "immediately". Is that what your experience and recommendation is, too?

What do the lights indicate, exactly? How serious of a problem could they indicate?

Thanks!

Could be an indication of alternator failure.

My wife took the Montero to Sears with instructions for them to perform a load test on the battery. If it failed the load test, the wife was going to buy a new battery.

She said the Sears mechanic performed a load test and said the battery was fine. He then did a test of the alternator and said the alternator was good.

Should I trust the Sears mechanic? Should I get a second opinion? Is there a simple test of the alternator I can perform with my volt meter?

mmsa2, can you try and write more legibly?

Those alternator testers are only good if you catch the alternator malfunctioning at that given moment.
