Default Cam Shaft Seal Install on 2000 Monty Sprt 3.0

Need some help here! I have already disassemled all items and am ready to install the passenger side seal, but would like to know if the new seal needs to be treated with any type high temp sealant on the OD? Also, if the seal needs to be seated all the way in the hole or just to the outer edge? Thanks for your input!!!

Hey dublup 50,

Are we talking rear cam seals or front? I am in the process of changing my rear cam seals once I get my Monty running again. From the research I have done any type of RTV sealant isnt required but it acts as insurance on that seal if you wish to use. Whatever sealant you use just make sure its O2 sensor friendly. The spot to apply it would be where the plate meets flush with the cam that way you are ensuring secure contact
and this is only with the rear cam seals!! I am not to sure about the front but from looking at them I am sure its just a pull the old one and plug with a new one. No sealant needed....but that is an assumption..

I hope this helps!!

Thanks for the info. I'm changing the front camshaft seal. The reason Im asking this question is because I purchased an off brand "Felpro" and it does not fit very tightly in the hole. I will go out today and purchase the OEM seal from a local Mitsu dealer and check the difference. I just don't want to have this leak, as it is a major job to have to change it out again. Also, I have changed out the rear cyl "O-Ring" and did not use any sealant. No leaks from the rear to report.

Default Completed Camshaft Seal Install 2000 Monty Sprt 3.0

Finished the camshaft seal install last night and no signs of leakage also checked this morning and the floor is dry as a martini. I did install the seal with high temp RTV sealant for anyone who takes look at this thread. Next up is a transmission flush and filter/gasket replacement.

Yes, there was a huge dif. The OD of the Felpro seal was very undersized and fit very loosely and I could have installed it with just my finger pressure. The OEM seal was a much better/tigher fit and installed with some force of a drift on the face of the seal.

Hi All,

I have 01 limited. After some research and googling, I found that
REAR Cam Seal part# is MN176208. I'm about to tackle this task my self. Would someone please confirm if that's correct?

Thanks!
