Default Wheel Shake at 55 mph

2001 Montero Sport Limited 4x4 - Having a wheel shake problem when reaching speeds between 50 and 55. The shake disappears when speed increases past 55 mph or speed decreases under 50. I am thinking that this may be an out-of-balance tire problem as I live off a pretty rough dirt road, but I have seen this kind of problem with a Range Rover that turned out to be a bad valve related to the steering gear. Has anyone had this problem with their Monty? Fix?

Since no one has answered I'll give one. Since your roads are gravel I would look for and remove any stones that may be trapped in the treads. You may have also lost a wheel balancing weight, there will usually be an impresion of where it was, could be on either side of the wheel. Other than that I'd say you need your wheels balanced.

I've had the wheel shake problem on my 2000 Monty Sport. Ended up being one tire with more tread wear throwing everything off. Had them rotated & balanced and everything was good after that.
