Confused about wheel hub assy. vs. wheel bearing replacement
 

I have a 2001 Montero XLS. The right front wheel bearing is beginning to make noise.
While doing searches on this forum, I have become confused as to what I need to replace. In one thread there was talk about needing a press to remove and replace the bearing. In another it was discussing replacing a wheel hub assembly.
My first inclination is that the difference is between the Sport and non-Sport. I did read on another website that fixing this is considerably easier on the non-Sport Montero.


Could someone point me to a thread or two on here that hopefully I haven't seen yet.

On pre-2001 models you could replace the bearing. On 2001 and older models the bearing and hub come as an one unit (hub assembly). Replace the hub assembly and you will be good to go.

Another quick question. On my F350 I had to replace a hub assy. and it was recommended (not by a mechanic, but on another forum) that they be replaced in pairs. Is that the case with the Montero, or is just replacing the one that is bad fine?

Just replace the bad one. There is no reason to do it as a pair on a Montero. There is no guarantee that the other side will not fail eventually, but it can be 10k or 50k from now. You have no way of knowing that. The work needed to be done to replace the hub is strictly limited to one side, so doing them one at at time makes sense.
I do not know how F350 is set up on the front axle, but if you had to take out half axles or do something that involved draining front diff, then doing them as a pair makes sense.
