Engine Temp. sensors identification

I just purchased a 1996 Montero SR, 3.5 V-6.

On the manifold(?) that the upper radiator hose connects to there are four sensors/switches(?), two in front (of vehicle) and two a couple of inches behind and to the left.

On the forward two, only the left one is connected, no wire to the right one. On the rear two...right one connected, no wire on right. I cannot fine any loose wires in the area that would work on them.

Engine runs pretty bad and I'm trying to slowly get in into shape. I subscribed to "ALLDATAdiy", but, it's REALLY limited as to info on this vehicle, almost useless. On their diagram, which looks like was drawn using Etch-A-Sketch, it only identifies the Engine Coolant Temperature Switch. It shows all four, but, only one is labeled.

Thank you

2 is the engine coolant temperature sensor, 3 is the engine coolant temperature gauge unit. :)
