FAQ Semi-custom Cheap Short Ram Intake For 2001-2006 Montero (not Sport) W/pic
1 Attachment(s)
Well, after a quick look there are no specifically made affordable intakes for our vehicles (2001-2006 USA Montero)
Some say they won't do much, others will argue. Anyways, I could not find a cheap EBAY one. Everyone knows intakes are not hard to produce, it just consist of a pipe and filter and anything needed to adapt your OEM lines and MAF/MAS. The only ones that "might" work are from Weapon-R or Injen but it seems like manufacturers get confused between the Montero and Montero Sport. That and those are $150-200+ So here is mine that I put together.. Attachment 7261 It almost looks like it was designed for our vehicle right? Well it's not, that is a short ram intake kit for 2002-2005 Ford Explorer V6 (not Sport Trac, not V8) I actually got mine for $25~ shipped they come and go on EBAY, but you have to make sure the piping is as shown in my final product. Here is an auction now, a little bit more expensive, but if you want to try it out, here it is http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BCP-02-03-F...d=p4506.c0.m245 For reference just in case the ebay auction goes down.. here is the picture of the Explorer kit.. http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/bestcarp...ExplorerV6.jpg Unfortunately the filter adapter to the MAF that comes with the Explorer kit will not work. You will need the ones made for Mitsubishi's. It doesn't have to be labeled for the Montero. The most common easy to find is the one for the 2G DSM turbos (95-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX/GST, Talon TSi) Here is the cheapest one currently going on eBAY http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-99-ECLIP...sQ5fAccessories For reference just in case the ebay auction goes down.. http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/eautotun...apter-Blue.jpg this will work as well http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-99-ECLIP...sQ5fAccessories It's more expensive however, but does offer bigger diameter opening. For reference.. http://www.cosmoracing.com/sale/intake/adk/admk.jpg So getting the Explorer intake kit above and the cheaper filter/intake is about $80. AGain it can be much much cheaper. You can buy the Mitsu MAF/MAS adapter without the filter for $10 shipped http://cgi.ebay.com/02-05-Mits-Lancer-Mass...id=p3286.c0.m14 And you can sell the MAF adapter and filter that came with the Explorer kit. And if you are asking why you can't use the filter that came with the explorer kit, the ID" is just way too big for the MAF adapter of the mitsubishi. If you get the more expensive one I also showed above it will fit, but that already comes with it's own filter. Then just go to Home Depot and get a brass fitting for the vacuum line so you can extend it to the nipple on the new filter. It's about $2 http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...erointake2.jpg Put it all together and your set. If you watch the auctions you can maybe get away in getting this all done for $50. Optional things to do is make a bracket. So the big question, any difference? Throttle response is much better. Power wise I felt it gave it some kick. Obviously no officially data, but the difference is there and can be felt. For as cheap as I got it, why not. |
thats pretty cool

Do you know if I could do the same thing with a cold air intake?
|
I love to see nice mods. for under a hundred dollars! Well done.
The only reason I have not gone the same route is a concern regarding water crossings. Although, I don't do enough deep crossing to demand a snorkel, I'd be a bit worried having the filter so exposed in the engine bay. Water that does get flushed into the OEM intake drains fairly well right before the air box. This summer in Colorado I found that it can drain quite a bit, without even getting the air filter wet. Have you thought of headers and a free flow exhaust? |
I know this post is kinda old but does anyone make a turbo kit for the Montero? Seems like it would fit right there on the passenger side

Air intake adapter for 2.4L
I took a shot on an adapter and found it to be a perfect fit with 2 minutes of sanding to clear a couple of screws. Mounts directly onto the stock intake.
Spectre #81403 I bought mine on line $12.00 free shipping. Took 10 min.to install just had to buy nuts and bolts at the hardware store. A 4" cone filter fits right on it. |
i since then removed the system, because im in CA, and just tired of having to remove it each time for smog.
If anyone is interested in purchasing this from me. I will include everything you see. for $50 shipped OBO. no po boxes, only within the USA. Via paypal just send me a private message |
Nice job on the mod. Two questions:
1. Did you notice any difference in the performance? I imagine it is your "daily driver" so the performance is a relative thing. 2. How come you have to change back every time for smog testing? Did the car not pass the smog test with the mod on it or is it a California requirement to have unmodified air intake system? Forgive my ignorance of this - they don't do the smog tests in the are where I live. |
