Front axle question
Does my 2001 montero limited have u joints or cv joints on the front axles (or both). How many on each side. trying to isolate a periodic clunking sound on turning. I was told u joints clunk but cv joints do not. Tie rods have been replaced. Would the rack make that noise?
thank you

That’s what I thought. Do the cv joints ever make a popping noise when turning wheel at a near stopped speed? (I know about the clicking noise they can make and this is not that). It’s only periodic and no sounds occur when turning at moderate speed. Thx
I don't know about popping noise vs. clicking noise (one person's pop is another one's click...). Bad CV joints will make most noise at full tire turn angle. I suppose they could make weird noises at moderate speeds, but most noise/clicks will be when tire is cranked to the max.
Hunter, this is one time “clunk” not a constant clicking. Happens at a very low speed, like when I am pulling out of a parking spot.
Questions:
1) I had all the front suspension replaced, struts, ball joints, sway bays, even lower control arms. My mechanic torqued them by feel (he’s an experienced mechanic) you mentioned once improper torque could cause noise. But does the suspension have much to do with turning the wheels ( when the sound occurs)? Also, are strut mounts a possible noise source? Not sure if they came with the struts?
2) I had new tie rods on before Firestone would give my car an alignment. Is it possible the tie rods were adjusted slightly wrong?
3. I’m not getting any clicking noise from the cv joints. Is it possible a clunk could still emanate from the cv joints, axles or rack?
I’m trying to locate the sound(s?) source as I’m in the vehicle. It’s difficult but it has sounded at times like it is drivers side just front of my seat? Is there any easy way to diagnose these sounds?
As you can tell, I’m a novice so thank you for your patience in answering questions.I really am trying to learn as much as I can about my car

Dan, here are my two cents on the problem you're experiencing:
1. A single click/clunk/pop mist likely eliminates CV joints as the culprits.
2. With a singular occurrence, I suspect something shifting in suspension. It can be lower or upper control arms, bushings, or strut mounts (upper or lower).
3. Since you've replaced some of those components, you can try to re-torque the mountong bolts (just in case). Start checking other components. Strut mounts (upper and lower) is definitely a suspect. Upper mount has a bearing. If it is frozen and doesn't turn smoothly, it can make that sound. Also check springs for cracks and spring coushins (rubber pads) for wear. If the pads are worn, you might be getting metal to metal contact that will "sound" much louder in the car.
4. Does the noise occur every time you make a turn? Left or right or both directions? Is it worse going up or down the hill? Will it make the noise if suspension is unloaded (front end on the blocks with wheels in the air and you turn side to side?
5. Try to have someone drive in the parking lot turning to force the noise, while your are outside. See if you can hear where it is coming from.
It's a tough one. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

It only happens periodically. No hills here. Usually when turning wheels to the left. I’ll take your suggestions and try them.
one more question. I bought 4 new O2 sensors. Should the connection colors between the new sensor and the engine connection always match? Ie: black/black, grey/ grey? is there ever an exception?
again thx for your time. Dan

Dan,
Did you ever solve your clunk/ popping noise? I am having the same issue with a clunk occurring in what sounds like in front of the driver seat when turning at lower speeds. Started happening periodically but has gotten worse. Replaced CV joints and inspected tie rod ends. CV axles didn't fix the clunk and the tie rods were in fine shape. I'm starting to think its the steering rack at this point...

No. I have not solved the problem but I neglected to have my mechanic put new strut mounts on with the new struts so that will be next on the list ..the fact you are still getting the clunk after changing the axles and joints is discouraging since they are way cheaper than replacing a steering rack .keep me informed about your progress and I will do the same.I don’t think there is any danger involved but it’s annoying as it’s a reminder something needs attending to..
