HELP...I am stummped 1996 Montero 3.0L 12 valve SOHC
I have replaced Timing Belt, Water Pump, spark plugs and Fuel injectors. Engine Seems to be sound. It Does have codes for downstream O2 sensors. ( They are not there, Its Mexico and cats are expensive and not required. Most people remove them here, as in this case). The problem is NO POWER, Throttle response is good sitting still, MAF seems to be working. Cleaned IAC valve, Problem is that It is VERY sluggish to take off, I mean NO ***** AT ALL, It will eventually get up to highway speed but very slow to get there. The short and long term Fuel trims look good on the scanner. Advanced timing is at about 17 degrees at idle (800 rpm) and TDC at base timing check. I have double checked the cam/Crank timing. It is dead on.No Misfires what so ever, 150 psi compression test consistent on all 6 cylinders. Also has new brakes, Not Sticking or binding. The differential lamp indicator flashes both front wheels at all times. No ABS light. I can move from 2 to 4 wheel drive and feel the 4 wheel drive engage, however lamps remain the same. Im hoping there is a sensor or connector to explore, but i do not know. Im and Engine Man, I dont know much about the drive train.
Sounds like you have the right kind of scanner on hand. Can you view live readings while you are trying to floor it? What does your engine load show? Do you have good response on air flow that relates to the engine load and RPMs? What are the "good" values on the Short and Long FTs? Can you see them both when engine is idling and when you give it all you got? Please post the values
Well, I figured out the problem. The new injectors, Provided by the customer fit 1997-2003 engines, I cleaned and re installed the originals (1995-1996 ONLY) and problem solved. Plenty of power. Now its a matter of chasing down a vacuum leak to correct the lean fuel trim condition.
Im gonna have to go backwards on the plenty of power comment. Still has reduced power and high positive fuel trims reading at 25. ( lean condition) Replaced intake gasket, and throttle body gasket and iac oring, but did not help.
Just in case - check your fuel delivery. It's possible that fuel pump is weak/bad or fuel filter is plugged.
Do your high positive Fuel Trims register at idle or at full throttle? That would point you in two different direction on causes of Lean condition.
