How to Remove 99 Montero Spark Plug Tubes?
 

Greetings. I searched the site, but did not specifically find any info on how to remove the 6 spark plug tubes on a 99 Montero with the 3.5 V6. This is the full size Montero, not the Montero Sport. We have the valve covers off and there is oil down around the spark plugs. We have the new seals that seals the top of the tubes, but shouldnt the tubes be removed, cleaned, and then re-sealed at the bottom?

Do these tubes come out by twisting and pulling? What is the best tools to use to prevent damage to the tubes? Or, is it advisable to not remove these spark plug tubes?

Not sure about the '99 model, but on my '01 the seals are on top of spark plug tubes (valve cover rests on top of them). Just stuff the paper towel down into the tube to soak up the oil that is sitting there. Then you can remove spark plugs, stuff another paper tower and clean out the bottom of the tubes. That should be enough and no reason to try to remove the tubes themselves.

Hunter.......Yep, the seals are on top of the spark plug tubes, and the valve cover puts pressure on the rubber seals. I also thought that there were seals on the bottom of the tubes, but maybe I am wrong. So, there is no need to remove the tubes and put new seals or apply a sealant to the bottom of the tubes?

We did the paper towell oil mop-up trick, then tried compressed air.

I tell you, these engines are not as easy to work as my ole 69 Chevy C10. Back in tha day, when you can climb in under the hood and sit on the inner fenders and get to everything......get tired, just lower the hood and take a nap.

Had to replace the 30 year old fuel pump yesterday.....piece of cake.

Yep.....crawl into the engine compartment after inserting a lounge chair and cooler of 4X Aussie Goldies. Pull the hood down (so thieves dont borrow/steal any of the cold Goldies), kick back and enjoy life. Shoot, might be room for a flat-screen TV up under the hood.....life is good.
