Lost original key - have a cut key, how to get it programmed?

Hi guys, I did a few searches on the forum but couldn't find anything. I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sports XLS. The story goes like this ...

I had a key cut for me a few years ago, but then never programmed it (had locked the key inside the car so just needed to open it up again). However, this time I think I really lost my key, I went riding and lo and behold, cannot find the key. I just need to get the key programmed and I understand I need to take it to the stealership. I remember when I was getting the key cut for me the serviceman told me about a sequence of pushing the brake paddle and getting the car to start, but I dont remember the exact details. None of the stealerships know what I am talking about.

Does anyone know how I can find that sequence. I won't mind calling a dealership or someone who is knowledgeable about this and I can fax my title, insurance card, etc to them to prove that I own the car.

Thanks guys, and sorry if this has been asked before. Typically, u r able to find everything on google, but this time around, damn, google had links but all of them were to sites which were more or less locksmiths. :(

This is probably a mute point as the local locksmith in the area where I live stopped by and programmed the key for me @ 40 USD. Surprising the stealerships wanted 45 USD for doing it and wanted to bring my car to them (which would have been another 90-120 USD).

I asked locksmith about what I asked before and he said there is something like that. It is often called break code, or emergency code. I will try to find information on that and if I find it, I will post it on here for anyone who runs in this situation.
