Montero 6G74 3.5 liter motor engine compatibility
Are all the Montero Sports and full size Monteros with the 6G74 3.5L motors compatible to be swapped into any Montero that originally had a 3.5L motor?
I don't plan on buying any Sport models to drive because of preference, but they are everywhere it seems and usually have good motors in them when parted out. I have 2001 XLS and 2002 Limited models with 3.5L motors. Will any/all of the 3.5L Sport model motors swap into my full sized models? A junk yard told me yes, but it was trying to sell me a motor, so I'm not sure if I trust the information. Thanks for the clarification if you know! |
Old thread but I'll answer it based upon my research... researching because I was about to do a 6G74 swap from a 2002 Montero Sport 3.5L into a Full size 2001 Montero 3.5L.
NO They are not all the same. The 2000-2003 6G74 found in the Full Size Montero was a version for the Montero only. Not for Montero Sport. MITSUBISHI 6G74 2/2000-2003 ENGINE 6G74. SOHC. 24 VALVE.CAM AND CRANK SENSORS. OIL FILTER MOUNTS TO OIL PUMP ON PASSENGER SIDE. 2/2000-2003 MONTERO ONLY. *NOT FOR MONTERO SPORT*. MITSUBISHI 6G74 5/1996-2004 ENGINE 6G74. SOHC. 24 VALVE.CAM AND CRANKSENSORS. OIL FILTER MOUNTS TO OIL PUMP ON DRIVERS SIDE. 5/1996-2000 MONTERO 6/1998-2004 MONTERO SPORT. I'm glad I found this information before I started. Phew... |
Thank you for posting the answer. This is one of those things, that unless you've done a ton of research or have completed similar project, you may not know the little details.
Question: Is change of oil filter location affects the engine fit in the engine bay? Is it possible to circumvent this problem by installing a remote oil filter? |
I think also the montero sport engine does not have a knock sensor.

From what I researched, its more than just the oil filter location. Crank endplay spacing and location of the cam position sensor are different as well. Those are just a couple that come to mind but those are big items.

Thanks for the answers. Too bad the leaders of the company didn't plan more modular motors for most of their fleet of cars. Would have been nice to be able to pull a motor from a half-dozen other makes and bolt them together.

Just confirming. I can put a 2003 or 2004 Montero Sport 3.5 engine into a 2002 Montero Sport? Thanks |
Engine Swap Questions
I hope I am on the right thread, I am new here. I am about to embark on an engine swap. from 1996 montero 3.0 engine to a 2002 model montero 3.5 engine. I need to know if this is a compatible swap. The block and harness connections look to be the same, It looks to me like it should fit. Is there any reason this swap will not work? Any advise or modifications that I may need to be aware of? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if it will *fit*
