Montero Sport, extremely high "idle"

Big problem.

I searched here, and I couldn't really find anything about this problem before posting, therefore, I'm posting.

My 98 Montero Sport has recently had a very high idle. It started yesterday as I pulled into work, and I noticed that (aside from using more brake than usual) my "idle" was near 2500 RPM. Today it has gone up to a little over 3000. It's no longer safe for me to drive it. The CHECK ENGINE light is also on.

Now I had been told that it may be a temperature sensor that may have gone bad (one that goes from the engine to the computer). But I have a feeling that it may be something more than that.

HELP!!!

It was probably a dirty Idle Air Control sensor, or all the sensors dirty/bad from the Air Box to the Throttle Body. I bet a good cleaning would have solved his problem.
