Is the Montero Sport good for light offroad?
 

Hey guys. I'm new to the Mitsu world so don't grill me. Anyway, I'm looking at an '01 Montero Sport ES and was wondering if it would be good for off-roading? Nothing extreme like the Baja 1000....Just some small hills climbs and mountain trails in NorCal. I'd really like to lift it but I doubt it can, Correct?:)

I would say you would be okay just dont take it WAY off road, but in my 88 montero i have been some suprissing places (mud pits, cliffs, and boulders) all bone stock so yeah i think youll be fine.

Thanks, 88. I have more question now....I read on Wikipedia that the montero's also came with a diesel engine, correct? I think it said in only europe it was available. I could be wrong but I don't remember. Anyway, To the point....What kinds of diesel engines could I put in it? It needs to stay street legal....I don't know what California laws would do about it but I was, technically, available as an option. I just need to find one....Or could I put like an diesel out of, say, a small dodge pickup?

Ummm, an '01 Sport and '88 Montero are two completely different vehicles. I've never driven a Sport so I can't help but you still don't have an answer to your off road question.

Since you'd be replacing the stock engine with another one, and of a different type (diesel), and it's in California, I highly doubt you'd be able to get it registered. I'm sure one could lift it, just be a matter of how high and how much money do you want to spend. It'd be MUCH easier and less expensive to lift something like a Jeep Cherokee, without sacrificing off-road capability. There are WAY more Cherokees available than Monteros, lots of parts available on places eBay, Craig's List, salvage yards, Jeep forums, etc.

I'm partial to the Montero for off-roading over the Sport.
However, if you want to lift the sport, check Old Man Emu's selection.
