Newbie Question: Transmission Slippage
 

Hey Guys,

New to the forum and just completed a search on "Transmission Slippage". Didn't see anything specific to my problem so I thought I would ask.

My 2002 Montero Sport, with 140k miles, has started to slip and stutter when going up steep hills (and there is one conveniently on the way to my house). This just started recently. Before that, it would just kind of "bog down" as it downshifted, but not slipp or stutter.

When I downshift the transmission from "D" to "3rd", it stops slipping.

I checked the fluid level and it is in the correct range. I replaced the fluid about three years ago. It doesn't smell burned or anything.

Any recommendations on what I should do? If I take it to the Misubishi dealer for checking, what should I ask them to do? What should I expect? If they recommend a rebuild, how much should I expect to pay? I'm worried about spending a lot of money on an 8 year old Montero with 140k miles.

The 4th gear is known to be a little weak. You're probably looking at worn out end clutches. I don't recommend taking it to a stealership, as you get second rate work at an astronomical expense.

The best thing for you to do would be to find the end clutch replacement kit, and have a shop do it, or if you have mechanically inclined friends, have them do it.

The price for the repair will vary from shop to shop. The only way to know would be to ask around local shops and get an idea as to what it will cost.

if you do decide to take it to a shop, make sure you agree on a flat rate, so no 'surprises' can jack up the cost of the repair. That's the kicker. Have an agreed price before any work starts.
