newby with a question
hey everyone, i just joined the site. can you guys help me out here?
i have a 1989 montero sport 4speed auto. i have never used the 4wheel drive and would like to know what exacly i need to do to engage the 4x4. your help is greatly appriciated. |

Stop the car (you can keep it in drive) put it in 4WD and away you go. The 4 little lights should light up shortly after you drive off. If you want to go back to 2WD you can do that while you are moving.

You should have auto hubs unless someone swapped them with manuals (good thing if you go off road as Auto hubs can fail more easily and usually at the worst possible time.
When going back into 2wd, come to a complete stop (I usually put it in park/neutral) and then pull the transfer case shifter into 2wd and then put the monty in reverse for 6-12 feet. When the wheel lock light goes off, you're in 2wd. If you have manual hubs you don't need to go into reverse but you do need to switch the hubs to the unlock position. |

I forgot about the reverse trick. Sometimes the lever gets stuck in 4WD. In order to loosen it, you drive in reverse for a few feet, then try to move the lever to 2WD again.

Took the monty up to the snow wasnt snowing so i didnt need the 4x4 [:@], lol, but it climbed upthere like a champ!;)
anybody know if they have lift kits for tha 89 monty sport? |

For a coil sprung v6 you can swap in gen II coil springs (stiffer) and torque the torsion bars. I should point out that 32x11.5" BFG MT's fit stock so you may not need to do a body lift if you're trying to simply fit larger tires. With 1-2" suspension lift you can fit 33's. With the above suspension lift and a 2" body lift you can fit 35's but you'll want do to a gearing swap to 5.29 gears or the engine won't have enough torque off road. For a leaf sprung I4 you can ad an add-a-leaf, or longer shackles for lifting the rear and again torquing the torsion bars to easily fit up to 32s and posibly 33's. 35's aren't recommended simply because of lack of power in the 2.6 unless you do a turbo swap from a starquest vehicle or a 4.3chevy swap.
