opinion on best atf fluid for the 2k1 montero sport?

hi guys i needed help deciding on which atf fluid is the best for these types of cars.
i've been researching the premium atf like mobile 1 and such but i was told that for these trannys you can only use dia queen j2 fluid.

any sugestions?

I did a 60k mile ATF and filter change on my 2004 Montero Limited. I used Valvoline Max Life ATF. It says it is SP III compatible. 2k miles later it has performed flawlessly. Time will tell, but so far the Valvoline Max life has worked fine and a lot cheaper than my dealer wanted for SP III ATF

There are many threads and discussions on this issue.
Do some research in order to make an informed decision.
I only use MM AFT.

Here is the link to the dealer that I use:

Good Luck

I have used this for 3 fluid changes(about every 35,000 miles) and it's great.
LubeGard Highly Friction Modified Transmission Fluid Supplement(HFM-ATF)
It plainly says on the front of the package that it converts any Dexron II, III/Mercon into Mitsubishi Diamand ATF as well as Mopar, Honda, and Toyota.
At around 30-32,000 miles my trany starts trying to hunt which gear to be in. It's a slight shudder at city speeds. I add an ounce or two of LubeGard and it fixes the problem until I get a chance to change the entire fluid.
Great stuff.

Oh, I got my LubeGard at NAPA

IMHO the MM AFT must be a better match for the MM tranny.
The simple fact that your tranny is "shuddering" should be enough for you to run a fluid that eliminates all shuddering.

Mistu ATF, period.

Mitsu ATF SPIII. Nothing else. Why chance it to save a couple of bucks? A rebuild is over $3K.

SSfanatic 02-16-2011 10:47 PM

This is probly gonna start a war but Mitsu ATF is garbage. There are far superior fluids out there. I like BG's full synthetic trans fluid, meets and far exceeds all the factory fluid specifications. Factory mitsubishi fluid is completely brown after 30k miles. After 30k-50k on the BG fluid it is still nice and pink, has not broken down at all.
