Default P0125

I have a 1998 montero sport ls.
I have check engine code p0125 I need to get this code gone so I can pass inspection. I had one mechanic scam the car and he told me I have 3 bad oxygen sensors. But I’m thinking if I had bad oxygen sensors I should have different codes come up instead of p0125.
Many suggestions would be Appreciated..

You are correct - O2 sensors have nothing to do with this code. Item number 1 to check is the engine temperature sensor. Keep in mind, there are several temp sensors on the engine. One sends the signal to the temperature gauge on the instrument cluster (this is NOT the right one for this code), the other one sends signal to the PCM (engine computer brain). This is the sensor you need to check/replace. Make sure to check the wiring harness that it is not broken or excessively corroded while you are there. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which sensor is which on your year Montero. On newer model years, it is a sensor with 2-wire connector that is sitting on top of the thermostat housing. You'll have to do some digging and googling to confirm.
