Passenger Cam jump
 

2002 Montero sport 3.5 changing timing belt and when I took off tensioner cam on passenger side jumped quarter of a turn forward.

can I move it back counterclockwise or move it forward or do I need to back crank a few teeth before I move move it

Yes, you can move it back into the right position. Go the closest distance. If you get interference, stop and try to move the crankshaft, then move again. It might be tricky, but doable. Been there, done that...
