Default Removing valve cover gaskets 00 Montero Sport

I changed the valve cover gaskets on our 00 Montero Sport the other day. Like many they were hardened and difficult to break loose. Once I got them off the engine I used a heat gun to soften up the gasket material and an awl to dig it out. The heat gun was a life saver. It took about 10 minutes to clean out the old gasket material per side.

Harbor freight seĺls a heat gun that works great for this. Money well spent.

Hope this helps!

Good advice. I have not though of using a heat gun to soften the old material. That would have helped when i had to do it

I need to do the valve cover gasket job too for my 2001 Montero Sport. I can't find a procedure to do it though. I bought a manual from ebay, but it doesn't include a VCG removal/replace procedure. Under the hood, it looks like the intake needs to come out among other things. What procedure did you use?

If your going that far into the motor with all that taken apart you mayaswell change the spark plugs, Change the spark plug/rubber gaskets in the valve cover. They are hard as a rock but will come right off with a tap of a hammer.

Good advice about the plugs, do you know which ones are correct or OEM? Advance Auto parts lists 39 plugs that are "exact fit". Also, will I need to change the intake plenum gasket too since it's coming off?
