Reprogramming transmitter after new battery installed

Hi everyone. I am a proud owner of a 2002 Montero LTD. I thought the range on my keyless transmitter was short, so I replaced the battery in the transmitter. Now the transmitter doesn't transmit. I verified the battery is installed correctly, and the car locks and unlocks properly with the key.

I tried the reprogramming instructions here where you connect the scan tool, and turn the key on and off three times. I tried this several times, and it never auto locked and unlocked. Is this even the proper procedure? I only have the one transmitter, and it would be nice to be able to use it again.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Shawn

Don't think that is the proper procedure.

Look in your owners manual. I remember seeing that you didn't need a scan tool.

I do not have an owner's manual, or a second key and transmitter. This is why I am asking for assistance from others who may know the answer.

I also have a '02 Limited, except I've never used my keyless remote.
I looked in my owner's manuel to see what it said about reprograming the unit.
It said when you replace the battery there is no need to reprogram the unit.
Simply replace the battery and close the cover. Have you checked your fuses?
Good Luck

I took the remote apart again. I cleaned the contacts, put in another new battery, and it still doesn't work. I guess I should have left it alone. I don't know what to do now.
