timing belt
My girlfriend has a 2000 Montero Sport with 62,000 miles on it. The dealer recommends that she replace the timing belt but the repair is pricey $600) and she is short of cash. Can she post pone this for another 10,000 - 15,000 miles

RE: timing belt
Short answer, no.
4 years of heating up + revs + wear and 62k mi. on that poor ol rubber belt [:@] If it breaks she will destroy the head (the valve stems will bounce off the tops of the pistons) inside of a few secs. Take 10 minutes and pop (unbolt or whatever) the top part of the timing belt cover off and inspect it eh? Burnt ?, frayed ?, teeth worn ? see any belt debris sprayed onto the surrounding area? DT |
