Transmission Problem

Hi.

I have Mitsubishi Montero 2003 Limited - 3,8 - 6 cyl - 81.000 Miles.

The transmission is acting really weird.

It's like I have no control of what 'gear' it uses. (Park/Reverse/Neutral/Drive)
When I switch between 'gears' I finally get it to Drive and it works...
...but it's very "heavy" driving.

Please, help!

take it to an auto trans specialist. this isn't the kind of thing that can be fixed on the internet.

also. don't buy autos in future.

I'm pretty sure auto is the only option in the US and Canada. i bought my 03 limited brand new and had no option for a manual.

I didn't really expect to get this fixed over the internet. I called AT Specialist and they said:

"This is a common problem for Montero... We have given up trying to fix those AT's... This is the planet gear... We can import a used AT for $5000USD and install it for another $1700USD... It's not just plug&play there have to be specialised configuration after installation".
The problem is... I'm located in Europe, Iceland where there are not so many Monteros. We have high import taxes on spare-parts and shipping fee is high.

I thought if this was a common problem, you would know. I just wanted a confirmation the AT needs replacement and ask if it needs any specialized configuration after installation.

being 2003 its likely a computer needs playing with. Thats 'specialist config'

Swapping a trans itself is a very easy job.
If a pro has diagnosed planet gear, id go with that.
Being auto, its probably too complicated to swap out actual gears.

i looked into rebuilding it, and its not an easy job what so ever! these AT are so sophisticated not everyone will be able to do it, and there is a high chance of them messing it up. and I'm sure you can find a used tranny for cheaper, i just picked mine up in canada for 1800 usd. and it is CLEAN.

Thanks for the answer. :)
I don't really think I'm going to rebuild this one. Did you replace it by yourself?
Did you need specialized configurations after installation? Computer work?

Thanks for answer. I think I'll try to find a new one to swap out.

Do you know if there are some other vehicles that has the same AT?

Where can I find the name of my AT?
( Cars VIN: JA4NW61S63J042608 )

Nice, that would be great to have some insight on the swap and how things work out. Good luck on your swap. :)
