the hard drive can be unlocked.and the OS is WindowsCE. The maps can be replaced with the updated ones. So, I was hopeful. But after reading around, it seems to me that even the newer and expensive Mitsubishi maps are not that great. Please forgive me if I got the wrong impression. I still have 2005 or 2006 maps in my 2007 Outie.

At the same time, I am pretty happy with the hardware, ie how fast the GPS sensor is locking the position.

So, I am wondering if we can use alternative maps from other sources such as igo maps like this one

Apparently they work with WindowsCE, but of course I don't know if they work with MMCS. If anyone has tried similar ones that are not too expensive or easy to get updates, could you please share the information.

Not exactly. It is heavily modified custom OS based on (but definitely not equal to) WinCE.

Unfortunately you can't use anything else but the dedicated Navteq maps modified for MMCS. Further down there is a thread regarding updated European Maps( 2010). Check it just in case someone mentions something regarding N America maps....
