Changing Out Mitsubishi Navigation Head Unit
 

I am looking to upgrade the Mitsubishi Navigation head unit to an aftermarket Alpine unit in my 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS, but wanted to know if that will cause any issues with the Mitsubishi Smart Key Fuse System? Will it stop any other features from working?

There might be other threads that cover this, but yes, you will lose functionality. The factory nav unit accesses many of the settings for stuff like HVAC and the like. You can see for yourself when you flip through the system menus. Maybe nothing too important to lose access to, but you will lose some control.

No, I still have the original. No complaints other than the nav maps are very old and costly to update. It's a 700-watt stereo system with sub, and I've loaded about 80 CDs on the hard drive (a unique feature from the time period before Bluetooth took hold), I can connect my iPod/phone to the back of the center console with an RCA-to-headphone cord and run it through the aux (you can too), it'll run satellite radio if I subscribe, and it sounds good. So I've seen no reason to replace it.

That said, the Alpine unit you're looking at does look pretty slick, and may be able to operate some of the car systems like the factory unit does, according to their marketing material. But $1100 installed? I wouldn't bother unless you're planning to keep the car for several more years. That money could be used to replace parts that are certain to wear out on an 11-year-old car -- like the radiator, which will probably start leaking within the next year with your mileage.

I'm looking to keep my Outlander for awhile, would really like to have Android Auto and all the other app features.
