checking valve clearance needed?
 

I'm performing a major service, doing the transmission oils etc. In the manual it says to check and adjust the valve clearances if needed. I called the dealer and they said no need to, as it will throw a code if they need adjustment? Does that make sense?

No real need. I wished I had checked mine when I was changing sparkplugs. I'm getting tapping that sounds like tapping lifters at idle even when warmed up. To check them, you obviously need to take the valve covers off...which means ripping off the intake plenums, which is a PIA.

Check/set them. Valves arent good for pistons.

That's correct Akzle, I was a bit puzzled too...but the intake valves are the only ones adjustable. Exhaust side does not need adjustment. The funny part is, Mitsu suggests adjusting them every 30k miles!

ha, not gonna happen. I can guarantee it isn't necessary to adjust them that often by the fact that there is no one on this board who's come in complaining of burnt up valves or even has stated they had the stealership adjust theirs. Everyone has stated the stealership has said it wasn't necessary. It shouldn't be too far fetched of an idea that the lawyers will trump an engineer for maintenance intervals.

sorry. Youre right. Thankfully i dont live where lawyers make all the rules. Yet.
But still. They only make the rules to avoid paying out on the majority of cases.
Its all about profit-loss.

I asked the dealer specifically if they could check and adjust the valves seperatley from the full $700 48,000km service package. They said they have never done it seperately and further they rarely do it...

I had our 2010's transmission fluid completely flushed and filled last summer. When the job was done I asked the tech about adjusting the valves. He said that over the years he had checked the clearance on a few vehicles, including very high mileage vehicles, and that not one had needed any adjustment whatsoever. He said that he knew the maintenance manual stated that it should be done, but that because of what he had seen, he would not recommend it.

BTW, I took this rare opportunity to ask about water pump replacement when the timing belt was replaced. (I had already been told by another reputable Mit dealer's service department that "the water pump in these vehicles is bulletproof. Replace it during the second timing belt change.") This tech said virtually the same thing. "Those water pumps last a very long time. You can have it replaced, but it is not called for, IMO. Just make sure you replace the fluid every five years with the Mit long life fluid."
