Coolant Change Questions

Hi everyone! I have a 2011 Outlander ES 4 cyl FWD with around 67,000 miles. Somehow I forgot to have the coolant change done at 60,000 miles like the owner's manual says to do. I did a search about the coolant change and read the service manual that you all were so kind to post on these forums, but I still have a few unanswered questions:

  1. The service manual discusses the need for a tool called "MB991871: LLC Changer." What is this? It is hard to tell from the diagrams what it is. Do I really need it? Where would I buy it? It looks like it is used at the radiator cap during refilling.
  2. Is it required (or even advisable) to do a flush of the system with distilled water before adding the new coolant? The service manual does not say anything about this, but a lot of "how to" videos seem to advise doing so on other car models. Also, would you use any of these detergent cleaning products during a distilled water flush?
  3. The service manual says as one of the steps to "replace the cylinder block drain plug gasket." What kind of gasket is this? There is no part number.
  4. I take it that it is necessary to remove the shield at the bottom before starting this job?
  5. I could not find a Mitsubishi Outlander-specific instruction video. Are there step by step instructions online anywhere else besides the service manual?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Hi Isophorone,

I am facing the same questions at the moment, and I am wondering if you have found answers?
My main question is whether the special tool is really needed.

thank you!

Thank you!

Is it required, or is it possible to perform the change properly without it? (outlander phev MY2013)

I posted back in 2016. At the time, I decided to drain coolant from the radiator, refill, and do another drain and refill after a week.

More recently, I hired a neighborhood mechanic to do the entire job for me.
