Covering plastics in the trunk area with carpet

Has anyone done or thought of covering the black plastic trim covering the rear lower quarter panels on both sides of the trunk area with carpet? I have an 11 XLS and the black plastic is all gouged and scratched up.
All my previous cars/CUVs had the area carpeted so why not take the 2 panels out, clean them with some degreaser, spray with adhesive and cover with thin, automotive carpeting...
Thoughts?

I thought about how to protect it as well. The only issue I would see is that the panels fold and slide under each other so depending on the thickness of the carpet it may not fit. the only other option would be to have a roll up or folded carpet that you put in place. So basically have it half glued down on the panel that doesnt slide under the "closest one to you". then roll out or unfold the excess.

Check out this one, it's OEM accessory for Outies here in Australia. It might help you get an idea how you will come up with your trunk area protection.
Outlander Accessories - Mitsubishi Genuine Accessories - Interior - 4x4
It's actually quiet expensive, I think there's one going on Ebay for almost AU$250.00 so if you could modify something else for half the price it's well worth it.
