Cruise Control Problem Outlander 08

My 08 Outlander the cruise control will work sometimes and other times it will not work. Sometimes you can get it to work by tapping on the brakes. If that does get it to work it will work good until the next time you tap on the brakes. Could it be a relay switch of some type or vacuum hose leak? Also there are times (its an automatic transmission) it will not shift out of park unless you tap on the brake a second or third time. And yes I am talking about tapping and holding down the brake in order to shift the car out of park. While holding the shifter I can feel when its going to work because there is a click in the shifter.

Thanks

i believe all cars with cruise control work in the sense they will always disengage cruise control when the brake pedal is pressed down enough to the point where your brake lights are also activated - which is well before any braking pressure is applied to the brakes

it is also normal for the outlanders that you must have your foot on the brake to disengage from park

You need to have your foot on the brake (not just tapping the brake) to shift out of park. This is a safety feature on pretty much all cars.

Ricbec is right tapping the brakes will disengage the cruise control. As far as setting the cruise control you shouldn't have to tap the brakes to get it to work. If it's not setting properly take it back to the dealer to have it checked. The Outlander has a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty that applies to both the original owner and second owner and as long as you're not beyond 60,000 miles it should be covered.

I am sorry I did not explain myself well. Yes, I am aware that you need to press the brake to get it out of park. I would have to press it a second or third time before I could get it to shift out of park. By pressing it a second or third or maybe fourth time I would hold the brake down until it would or would not shift out of park. And I did take it into the dealer today. I actually had 58600 miles on it. When I explained the symptoms to them they came back and told me there were a couple recalls that should address both problems I was having. So hopefully today it will be fixed. Thanks for all the help.

Glad to hear the dealer will fix it.

I thought I read a while back of a relay in the console area, down by the shifter that released it when the brake was pressed...sometimes they'd fry and would need a replacement.

08 Outlander Cruise Control turns itself off

Hi, I have an 08 Outlander and am having problems with the cruise control.

It turns on fine and lets you set the speed etc. Problem is that it randomly switches itself off while I'm driving along. not touching the breaks, or lights, or hitting bumps etc. Just switches off and i have to turn the ignition off and on again to let me turn it back on.

Any Ideas?

Hi!
I had the exactly same problem on my 2008 2.0 DiD Lancer! After all checks the fault was caused by the cam shaft sensor. After the replacement everything was OK with the Cruise Control!
