Dealer says Synthetic ONLY - 1st oil change

I called to schedule the first oil change in the Outtie and the service tech says to me "I'm sure you're aware, but we only use what Mitsubishi tells us to use on the new Outlanders, which is Mobil 5000 Synthetic oil".
I know there was a thread about switching to Synthetic, but did anybody else's dealer give them the same spiel about Mitsu stating to only use synthetic oil?

I told him i wasn't aware of that, but was planning to switch over to synthetic anyways. Since my first 3 oil changes are free I'm not worried about the price jump, but this was news to me.

Ummm... Mobil 5000 isn't synthetic...it's standard dino oil.

Go somewhere else. Your dealer is

1. Incompetent
2. A Fraud
3. All the Above

I'd probably go so far as to report it to Mitsubishi

I'll have to check into what they actually use. If it's not synthetic and they try to charge for synthetic i'll raise a big ruckus for sure. Thanx for the info.

I'd ask to see the bulletin requiring synthetic as well. I'm sure we'd all like to know :)

Nothing from my dealer either....they just recommended standard dino oil....though I have switched to synthetic.

Synthetic is better than conventional, you should switch to it anyways.

For the first 500-1000 miles you should use conventional.

The appt is scheduled fortonight so i'll have to check on the type they use. The guy said "we only use what Mitsubishi recommends which is Mobil 5000 synthetic". He may have mispoke and only said synthetic because the Mobil 5000 lasts longer between oil changes.

What are your dealers charging for synthetic oil changes? I'd like to compare.

RE: Dealer says Synthetic ONLY - 1st oil change

AFAIK, what Mitsubishi recommends is 5W20, but doesn't say whether synthetic or not. IMO, If I had to change it every 3500mi, I'll go conventional, because basically I feel like it's wasting money since at 3500mi that oil still look like it's clean. Although there's no debate synthetic is better than conventional, but what I'm saying is conventional Mobil is more than enough for the 3500 mi oil changes.

RE: Dealer says Synthetic ONLY - 1st oil change

The reason it's called Mobil 5000 is that Mobil says it's good for 5000 miles.

I agree with rcpax. If you're changing every 3 months and 3000-5000 miles...then conventional is more good enough

RE: Dealer says Synthetic ONLY - 1st oil change

I would recomend you to switch synthetic if you dont mind the extra $20 or so. A lot of people think its pointless to use synthetic if you have to change it at 3500/3months anyway, but the true quality of synthetic oil comes in the form of being able to maintain its chemistry even at high/cold temperatures. A perfect example would be if you do a lot of long distance driving were you car is running at a verry warm temperature constantly, conventional oilwill do just fine, bud its protective capabilities are reduced the longer it runs at higher temperatures, synthetic however remains constant through outany temperature range. So 20 bucks seems reasonablefor that extra peace of mind. I will not get into the typical argument that usually arises during theseconventionalvs syntheticssubjects but I will tell the $ is well worth it in the long run if you plan to keep that car. Now if you plan on trading in or selling, dont use synthetic because you will never see the fruits of your crops.

Lots of good brands of oil...

Mobil1 is good, but they changed back to Group III stock, whichstarts from oil, but is refined and hydrocracked.I love the hyprocrasy as Mobil sued Castrol for for claiming Syntec (Group III)was syntheic.

I'll run through my stash of M1 and will likely switch to Pennzoil Platinum because I don't care for Exxon/Mobil as a company

RE: Dealer says Synthetic ONLY - 1st oil change

They ended up using Mobil 5000 which is dino oil not synthetic. The first 3 are free at my dealer, but after that they want $40/oil change. That seems high to me. I've always used regular oil, not because i'm partial to it or anything...i just could never see spending $50+ every 3500 miles.

Since there regular oil change price is high, I may just buy a case of synthetic for $30 and see what they'll charge then.

You can get 5 qt jugs of synthetic oil (Mobil1, Pennzoil Platinum, Syntec...) at WalMart for under $25
