Found the Rattling Noise :(

I kept hearing a vibrating rattling noise coming from the rear of my 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS V6, thought it was a tool or something in my inside my car. Found out the noise was from the under the car spare donut. I figured let me drop down the spare to air it up and put lock it up back nice and snug. Once I drop the spare donut I find out it is completely rusted out. I go to turn the air valve cap and the entire rubber stem comes clean off :(. Do you guys think I can take it to a tire shop have them install a new air valve rubber stem, Lube up the edges of the tire and see if it holds air? Or just go without it and tighten the spare donut cage and forget it? Anyone else driving without a spare donut? Does anyone know where I can find a new spare donut wheel?

A year or so ago while doing some other work my local shop noticed that the spare tire wheel on my Outlander was rusted out. I ended up replacing both the wheel and tire.

It's certainly an option to go without a spare. Did you know that new Outlanders don't even come with a spare - just a fix-a-flat kit? I'm not so sure about that, but have to admit that flat tires are pretty rare these days.

Personally I wouldn't mess with trying to salvage the tire if you decide to keep the spare. I'm sure you could pick up a donut wheel with tire installed for not much $$.

I noticed walmart has generic spare donuts. you can buy the tires on tirerack.com. I would think a shop could put a rubber stem in the tire for next to nothing.

Your cheapest option is to look for it on junk yards. Outlander Sport and Outlander (2nd and 3rd gen) spare wheels will have the exact fit. 5x114.3 mm bolt pattern and 67.1 mm center bore diameter is used in many other cars (e.g Hyundai Santa Fe, Tucson, Kia Sportage). Looking also these models you can increase your chances.

Will this fit in the spare cage under the Outlander? https://www.mitsubishidirectparts.com/oem-parts/mitsubishi-spare-wheel-4250a120
