Low coolant. And what type of coolant?
 

Hi all.

My 2008 Outlander (V6) is about 1 year old.

I never thought to check the coolant level before. I don't know where it was when I took delivery of the car, so nothing to compare against.

I just decided to check my Overflow tank and the level is quite a bit lower than Low, with cold engine.

And it went up just a little bit with warm engine, but still doesn't reach the Low mark.

I figure I can add some coolant, except I don't know what type. Mitsubishi manual says to use Mitsubishi coolant (figures), which is kind of vague.

Is there a coolant like Dex-Cool that I could find at an auto parts store that will work? Will it be OK to mix that with the existing coolant?

(My Pontiac GTO takes Dex-Cool and it cannot be mixed with any other type of coolant or else)

Mine never gets above low. Never has, never been a problem. Check the actual radiator (when it's cold).

Rip14 is right, check the coolant when its cold. Coolant is sucked out of the overflow tank as the engine heats up, and then goes back into it as the engine cools. Thats why you should check it when cold.

My owner's manual says "Long Life Antifreeze Coolant or an equivalent". I have a 4 cyl ES, but I would think the V6 would use the same coolant.

that's right, mine says to use "long life antifreeze or an equivalent", I think there is another spot where it says to use Mitsubishi coolant for best results :)

So which coolant do you guys use? :)

Also the radiator cap check is a little strange since the cap is not on the radiator like most other cars, but instead the cap is on the radiator hose.

Time ago the level was low in my Outie too, I went to dealer and they filled it without cost for my. A thing, don't mix different antifreeze types. . .

The way dealers are here, they will want to sell you a brake job if you show up asking to fill up the coolant :)

i had to add a bit of coolant as well. I just used Prestone all makes (non-Dexcool)
