I just bought a 2014 outlander. How can I update the navigation system please

Your local mitsubishi dealer has the ability to update your MMCS navigation software.

I went there and they saidnit would cost 250.00

Not cheap i know. Here in Australia its about $200 AUD

You can buy map updates online and install them, but they aren't cheap. You won't save much over what the dealer charges.

I bought the 2019 update on ebay for 36.00.

I was very lucky

Wow, that's a great deal. Hope it works as described. I never updated my maps, and they are now 13 years old. Sometimes I'll be driving on a road that didn't exist when the maps were made. Annoying, but still works when needed. I just retired that car, anyway.

have there been problems with the navigation not updating with a new SD card?

I just bought and installed the 2020 update for my 2014. Went as planned. I'd love to recoup some cost by selling it on, but I believe the activation code locks it to the vehicle. Anyone know of a hack?
