Default MPG on UK 2.4 petrol engine

Just for fun I went into the mitsubishi UK site. I noticed on the 2.4L 168 bhp petrol engine which is what I have on my ES the urban (city) mpg is 22.4, and the extra urban (highway) mpg is 37.6. This is considerably higher than the 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway here in the US. Besides differences in how the UKtests mpg is there any other reason why the mpg would be so different on what appears to be identical engines?

Yes there is a reason............. Uk gallons are bigger than American gallons............
Our gallon is equal to 4.546 litres.............
Your gallon equals 3.78 litres..... not quite sure how that equates, but that's the reason!
For a change ours is bigger than yours.!!! LOL

Thank you Ronwill. I was aware of differences in US versus UK/European measurements such as a quart vs a litre, but didn't know it carried over to gallons.

One other point. Since a UK gallon is equal to 1.20 US gallons the difference in 20 mpg city vs 22.4 urban makes sense. However the 25 mpg highway vs 37.6 extra urban tells me very different methods of computing this mpg must be used.

Yea, something is very wrong. They also list the L/100km, and comparing it to the Canadian web site, City 12.6 uk 10.4 Canada and Highway 7.5 UK and 8.0 Canada. Now it looks like the UK has the six speed Automatic and Canada has the CVT, but I doubt it explains the difference.

If you download the UK brochure on the Outlander from the mitsu UK website they show the CVT for the 2.4 engine. I agree a 50% difference in highway (extra urban) mpg does not make sense even with the 20% larger UK gallon. I assume that US and UK emission standards are not that much different so again you are talking about very identical engines in very indentical vehicles.

What's very odd is that in the metric units, the consumption is a bit better (in the UK) on highway driving, but far worst in the city. Maybe the UK has more traffic-jams [sm=smiley2.gif]

Starting in 2008 the USmileage ratings dropped for most cars because the EPA (the US testing agency) went to more realistic tests that betterduplicate actual driving conditions. In many cases this ended up in 15-20% drops in mpg over the 2007 ratings. Obviously the UK has different testing methods than the US.

Hi again,
If you hook up to this link you will find a guide as to how fuel consumption estimates are worked out in uk / europe.and you might be able to compare the methods usedwith those on our side of the pond.!

One point of interest, all our Outlanders are fitted with 4 wheel drive as standard.I presume that your 2 wheel drive cars are front wheel drive and dont have a big lump of a differential between the rear wheels. If this is the case your cars should be fractionally lighter than our versions and possibly therefore should return a better MPG?????????

i know the brochure for the i4 says 20/25mpg but when i bought the car they had the info sheet on the back window saying something like 27/36. i could be mistaken but i know for a fact it was rated higher than what the brochure claims.
regardless i have not gotten less than 25mpg in city and 30-32mpg on highway.
