EI doesn't permit the engine to start if key is not there.

The key transmits a unique code (unique just to your vehicle) that allows the engine to start. If the code is not transmitted the engine doesn't start. Think of it in the same terms as a garage door opener that transmits a unique code to open your garage door.

What this means is if you lose one of your keys you can not just take your other key to a hardware store to have a duplicate made. It won'tstart your vehiclebecause the duplicate key does not transmit the code. If you losea key you mustgo to a mitsu dealer to have another key made that transmits your unique code.

If the car is running to start with, the car can still get jacked and will keep running without the FAST key, but the next time it gets turned off it will not be able to be re-started. Similarly, if you're driving down the road and throw the FAST key out the window the warning chimes will sound to tell you that the key is missing, but the engine will not stall.

I had the same question when I bought my Outlander- if I have this wrong, somebody please correct me.

It makes sense to me if your vehicle is already started, it will continue to run no matter what happens to the key.Think whatcould happen if your driving down the freeway at 65-70 mph with cars right behind you and suddenly with no warning your engine quits and you stop abruptly. Big accident!!!
