Weird noise only @ 600-750 rpms. Outlander 2007

Hi everyone!

I have noticed that my Outlander (2007) is making a weird noise when reach 600-750 RPMs. It makes that noise only at
600-750 RPM approximately, not at more or less revolutions. When the AC is on is more noticeable. The noise comes from somewhere near the rack and pinion system. Actually when I touch one of the power steering tubes I can feel the vibration of the noise. I will try to record the sound so you can listen thru the web. Have anyone noticed this noise or is able to reproduce this issue? The Outie is working properly in all aspects but this noise in really annoying some times. I’m going tomorrow to the service center.[sm=smiley24.gif]

Well...as OTO said....it is under warranty, so I wouldn't get too upset by it as long it gets fixed.

They couldn't squeez you in and take a look? I hate when they do that........

Could very possibly be your PS pump, or maybe even something simple like a lack of fluid. BTW 600-750rpm is usually referred to as 'idle'.

A lack of fluid would indicate a leak though.

A little confused ..is it 1600 rpmas in the title of the thread or 600 rpm as in the body text?

Sorry 600-750 RPMs. 1600 was a typo.

Ill give you some info about the system so that you understand whats happening. It doesnt make it not a problem but maybe shed some light on whats happening.

The steering pump will makea rumbling typenoise under a few different circumstances.
Super tight turningsoon after the vehicles started. You should give the vehicle a chance to run a bit before hard cranking the wheel. Also most vehicles grumble when hard cranking the wheel to he stop, I try not to do this and with the small turning radius of the outie I havent evern come close.
The idle isnt high enough to run the steering pump properly, this is the most common right after starting the car.
Having a load on the engine such as running full AC, having the lights on the nav system and dvd player all put a load on the alternator which along with the AC puts extra drag on the engine which pulls the rpms down and causes the steering to surge. Also if youve done something like let the kids watch dvds while the car isnt running this puts addditional load becasue the battery is undercharged and the alternator is trying harder to keep up.
However the newer vehicles should be better at keeping the rpms up under load so the steering pump can run.
The belt going to the pump can be too loosely adjusted from the factory
You can also have low fluid or a blocked orifrice. Which has been mentioned.
I can say that I have not noticed any steering noise at all on mine. It may not even be steering related but another issue that shows up as noise in the power steering.
Hopefully you can give them enough info that they can direct their attention to the problem area which may not be the steering at all.
