Weird ticking noise when revving the engine (V6 3L)

My Outlander is V6 3L with around 76000 KM (47000 miles) and recently I have noticed a strange ticking noise that is related to the engine rpms. I initially thought it is because of the cold here in Calgary (-20C or -4F) but the noise is still present even in the underground parking at 20 C or 68 F although it is a bit less in intensity.

The symptoms are simple: the more revs on the engine, the faster the ticking sound gets; it seems to be related to the engine revs. The best example is when I down shift and the engine is around 3000-4000 rpm or when in neutral and revving the engine. It is also present when accelerating but it is harder to pick up because of the increased engine noise during load. I am using 5W20 Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and filer and the last oil change was done about 3 months and 4000 KM / 2500 miles ago so old dirty oil shouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone know what causes this ticking noise and how can it be fixed? Thanks

lifters. thicker oil. yw.

I've had a ticking noise once when my timing belt was in the process of breaking on a previous vehicle. Evidently a piece of the belt was slapping another part causing a ticking noise. At the mileage you have, I would lean more towards lifters...but belts are easy to check. My 6B31 engine has been ticking for a while due to lifters.

Thicker oil will only quiet the lifters, but won't solve the problem. Half of your lifters are hydraulic and half are manual adjusted. (Intakes are manual and exhaust are hydraulic...Section 11A-13 in '07 Service Manual) I've yet to check mine. I'll check at my 200k mile spark plug change...i'll have the intake removed at that point.

As an update, I followed the guide posted HERE and the noise is almost gone.

The 5 minute V6 lifter Noise Fix

Now that I've made you all paranoid, here's the laughably simple fix. The VLA's were designed to respond to a pattern of gentle revving to flush the oil out of the little cylinders (those clever Mitsu engineers, eh?)

Warm up the engine.

With the engine in neutral, gently rev it from idle to 3000rpm over a period of exactly 15 seconds. Your goal is a constant gradual increase to 3000rpm. At the 15 second mark, drop the throttle (foot off the gas) to idle. Now let it idle for 15 seconds to complete one 30 second cycle

Repeat the 30 second cycle in #2 from 10 to 30 times. If the problem persists after 30 cycles, this is not your problem. It fixed mine after only 5 cycles - total silence.

I did about 30 cycles just to be sure.
