Mitsubishi Exceed Auto Gearbox help

The car has an Auto/Manual shifter.

Having a problem with gears not changing in Auto "drive": will not change out of first gear, however can be changed when in "manual"

Any ideas why this would happen?

Can driving the car in manual and not drive damage the gearbox?
