Default PLUG IN TRAILER LIGHTS ON 99 MONT. SPORT

I just bought a plug in connector for my 99 Montero Sport XLS and I have no idea how it get them plugged in. I took out the taillight, noway they go there. I am sure that the correct plugs are behind the plastic sidewalls in the cargo area but I have no clue how to get there. Any suggestions?

The modual goes behind the tail light housing on the driver's side. You have to take off the cover, then the housing. It is cramped in there, but that is where it goes. Also, if you have a 5-way plug with a connection for a "break release" (usually a white wire), connect the white wire from the plug directly to your back-up light wire. Do not go through the modual as it does not have this connection. (The break release is used when your trailer has a surge break. The surge break operates when the towing vehicle breaks and the trailer tries to push. The surge break is in the tongue and applies the breaks to the trailer. Therefore, if you are trying to back up, the surge brake won't let you unless your back-up lights wired to the surge break disengages the break.)
