Cracked turbo
I just picked up a 14b for nothing, free. great shape except i think they threw it down because there are two cracks in the exhaust side. they are hairline cracks. one starts at the dump tube and goes inward and the other one just extends a little past the dump tube. but when the flapper closes it seals it off. my question is do you think it would hurt anything , and if so what would be the out come. thanks

RE: Cracked turbo
The bad.....exhaust leak, it may throw off your o2 sensor.
The good...you've got a good turbo. You can probably get those cracks welded shut. Just make sure that the welder doesn't do a crap job. At least make it somewhat professional. My motto, if the job looks good, then the chances are the job was done good. |
RE: Cracked turbo
yea i have a friend who will weld it for me, but if nothing to serious would come out of it i was just gonna put it on. i didnt really think it was all that bad, but a second opion doesnt hurt. and yea a 14b for free is a lot better than my t25

RE: Cracked turbo
Cool, just make sure that it doesn't have any significant shaft play before you put it on, because you will have to go through a modification just to put that turbo on.

RE: Cracked turbo
also make sure to check turbo seals...if you put it on and theres massive smoke(white) there thats the reason..it happened to me...i thought it was a head gasket...but it was my turbo seal being broke

RE: Cracked turbo
everything else seems to be ok no in and out side play, very little side to side play. im just gonna put it on and see were it takes me. again for free cant go wrong.

RE: Cracked turbo
What is
very little side to side play |
RE: Cracked turbo
maybe two three i think it barely moves

RE: Cracked turbo
2-3mm seems a bit too much for me, lol. I get barely 1/4 of a MM of play on my turbo before the motor's initial start up. That means that there's no oil pressure in there to keep it from moving around.
Give it a try if you feel comfortable with it and don't forget to prime it before you start the motor. Also get back with us after it's all warmed up on how much play you have then. Make sure that the blades aren't touching the compressor housing either. |
