Im a fabricator/welder. I work for a small company that does the intriquite things noone else wants to do. We are sub-contracted by Hammerts Iron Works out of St. Louis. All I do day in and day out is take blueprints that my boss gives me and fabricate stairs, handrails, structural steel (beams, tubes, channels, etc.) Real challenging job though. Here in the last two weeks we got in like 120, 000 lbs of steel. There are only 6 of us in the shop! You can imagine the horror from here.

That job sounds fun to me! I've never tried welding, but I've always been interested in it. How hard is it?

welding isnt too hard to do but it is hard to be good at. I did it a bit in the high school. Mostly just mig welding though.

Might turn into a hobby of mine when I get older... how much does welding equipment cost? .. I guess you would say a welding "starter kit" haha

depends on what kind of welding. Mine is mostly MIG (which is fast production). And it is a fun job. I have a million pics of things I have made over the last several years. And of course I make myself and my son things after work somtimes. I have made 2 beds (one for my son is a loft bed with a built in computer desk), 2 coat-racks, several end-tables and 2 coffee tables. Oh, and a cool looking A-frame porch swing. Theres more Im forgetting no doubt, but thats some of it. Go here and you will see alot of what I make before its erected in the field if ya wanna look>>>>http://www.hammertsiron.com/

then go to projects.

Oh, and I meant to add my new welder came in today, Miller, around $6000. Doubt you will want to start with something like that though!

lets put it this way, I left at an hour and a half early like 2 days ago due to heat exhaustion (and I DID drink plenty of water). While welding with a mig you cannot have a fan on you due to the gas shielding. Funny thing is the day I left early I wasnt even welding or cutting anything with oxy/acetelene or a plasma cutter.
