Upgrading My Rear End – Need Advice
 

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to beef up my truck’s rear end and I keep seeing recommendations for a ford 8.8 differential cover. Has anyone installed one before? I’m curious about fitment issues, gasket choices, and whether it helps with leaks or heat dissipation.

Also, are there any must-have tools or tricks to make the installation smoother? I’d love to hear your experiences with stock vs. aftermarket covers and whether the upgrade is really worth it for street and occasional off-road use. Any input would be much appreciated!

Hey! I’ve run a Ford 8.8 with both the stock cover and an aftermarket one, so here’s my quick take.

Fitment is usually straightforward as long as it’s truly for the 8.8 (double-check bolt count and axle application). Most quality aftermarket covers line up fine, but some of the thicker cast ones can be tight on certain suspension setups or sway bars.

For gaskets, I’ve had the best luck with RTV (Ultra Black or The Right Stuff) instead of a paper gasket fewer leaks if you prep the surface well (scrape clean, brake cleaner wipe-down, let RTV skin before tightening). Torque in a crisscross pattern and don’t overtighten.
