you can add people to your contacts then you will always know when they are online. but random searches by avatar name, no. unless they answered one of your questions or you answered one of theirs then you can just look for them in your questions and answers click on their avatars and see if they accept emails or not if so email them if not wait until they ask a question and tell them in your answer to their question that you would like to email them or whatever.
