Default Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R Diesel - intermittently losing power

Hi folks

I'll preface this by saying I don't know much about cars. I've taken the Triton to my mechanic 3 times over the last year and the problem still persists. In his words "this is something you could sink a lot of money into and still not find the problem." I simply can't afford to spend any more on it so this is a last ditch effort to see if there's anything else I can do before I resign myself to selling the car and just seeing what I can get.

The Problem:
While driving, with no discernible trigger (ie accelerating, going up a hill, towing a load, having just refueled - it seemingly happens randomly), the car will suddenly lose power. The engine is still running but won't rev higher than approx 2000rpm with accelerator fully depressed.
When this happens, I'll pull over and shut off the car. The engine shudders a bit before shutting off. I wait 30-60 seconds and restart it while revving the engine. The exhaust blows a bunch of grey/black smoke and then runs normally. This will usually fix the issue, but sometimes it will happen again within a few minutes and I have to repeat the procedure 2-3 times.
Sometimes the engine light will come on, sometimes it won't. When it does come on, it turns off once the car is running normally.

What my Mechanic has tried:
- Scan the vehicle for faults: P0093 fuel leak problem
- Check freeze frame data: live data OK and unable to replicate fault
- Replaced fuel filter
- Replaced suction control valve
- Clean MAF sensor
- Remove and clean out fuel tank

Specs:
2008 Mistubishi Triton GLX-R 3.2 Diesel
Manual
220,000km

The biggest issue is that it seems to happen totally randomly and intermittently. Sometimes it will be fine for months. Sometimes it happens every other day. At no time has my mechanic been able to replicate the fault.

So, internet brains trust: any ideas on things I can do relatively inexpensively? I have time, but no money and not much expertise. Thanks in advance!

I’m currently going through this exact issues started maybe a month ago, today finally the car decided to completely shut off while losing power took it to my local Mitsubishi dealer to do a check over and told them I don’t want the car back until it’s fixed or sorted out.

they rang later today to say they found NOTHING and it’s good to pick up. It’s beginning to be quite dangerous.. I’ve read on Facebook and other forums that it is the EGR valve causing this issue. I asked them to check that and they said they will Monday so fingers crossed.

people have bought the EGR Delete module and have said it worked and stopped the stalling / loss of power
