View Full Version : why not supercharge it?

Just wondering why Mitsubishi isn't offering a supercharger on it's new "MIVEC" V-6 Eclipse...To me, it's kinda disappointing that the V-6 is producing 263 horses at 5700 RPM, which really isn't that bad and it's a SOHC..What about us sport compact guys who like the extra boost from a turbo or a supercharger? I own a '99 GS-T which is halfways customized and haven't done that much to the engine and it's putting out that much power with a 4 banger, stock turbo, and a couple of mods..I'll stick to my 2nd generation 4G63..The 3rd generation was a mistake stylewise and I didn't like the thought of them producing a V-6 engine anyway..The '06 is a good lookin' car though, just need to beef it up a little.. Just posting this cuz I can't find out how to e-mail Mitsubishi and ask them about it after being all over their website.

because the evo was meant to be the top of the line mitsu for performance, not the eclipse. they market it toward people who like to "cruise", listen to loud music and have some pep, im sure you've seen the gay eclipse commercials.

ya those commercials are not the best the only good part is the women and the car!:D

I like them personaly after siting in on i like the layout a lot. they feel more sporty like seats.

agreed. if they turbo/supercharge the new eclipse, it will compete with the Evo, and possibly take sales away from it. thats not what mitsu wants

this is also why GM stopped making the F-bodies..because they were taking market away from the corvette

If you do wnat to boost a 4g hahn is looking for project cars,6cyl/ 4cyl, and conceptillusion is making a 2nd stage kit for the 4g 4cyl right now. Like everyone above me the 4g63 in the eclipse was to hold over the market untill they could start to move some evo's, once they started to by by gsx/gst.

RIPP Mods is also making an SDS kit for the v6. don't know if they are also doing it for the 4cyl

Not to get o/t but any of you guys ever see a lovefab kit for a s2000? I wish there was a compaany out there that made nasty manifolds for a 420a, so far the clostest thing that I have found was a turbocalculator.com

I dunno I would think that even if the Eclipse were taking business away from the Evo what's it really matter they're both Mitsu and maybe some of us poor saps would rather have the Eclipse body instead of the lancer? I dunno just my thoughts on the whole idea.

You have to consider two things though.

1. Mitsu has the eclipse for people who like to "cruise", and the evo for people who want performance. If both cars offer performance, then the people who want that will choose one or the other, while people who just want a cruising car will look elsewhere.

2. If the eclipse was supercharged, it would be very expensive and not too many could afford it. The top of the line eclipse is already around $28k, almost as much as an evo, and if it were supercharged, not only would it cost more, but all it could do was drag race because the frame was not designed to handle well around a track like the evo.

x2 The eclipse is seen as a kid car. If it were s/c it would prolly upp the price abou 10g, for that money, 39g's you could get a sti, vett, cobra, used prosha, nice bmw. The thing is no one wants to spend alot on the eclipse. That was one of the major porblems with the gsx, the price tag was tooo high.

It doesn't matter either way mitsu needs to do SOMETHING to save thier bacon or they'll be going bankrupt before long here.

well i dont know much about superchargers but i do know that most of the people around me with turbo kits on their car do better in the street races then those with superchargers. with a bigger engine the twin turbos seem to work great and with 4 bangers plain old turbo kits give a nice boost to be honest id rather see the 6 cylinder with twin turbos then with the supercharger but maby thats just me

WTF were your trying to say here? Twin turbo 4 cyl, possible but not feseable. Meaning its more work to make it happen and the results are the same with a big turbo.

good call on that one...but i don't know. remember Nontoxic said he knows alot about cars(which we proved wrong)....and 93GS said he doesn't much about superchargers(and obviously, he doesn't know much about anything other than what F&F/2F2F taught him)
