01 limited montero
couple of question on my 01 montero
1) any cheap way to put a new cat on the first cat on the drivers side?
2) is this possible?
settings: I live in houston no 4x4 for me at all.
Is there anyway to convert the monty to 2WD? even if it means pulling tranny and replacing it with a RWD tranny. I'd like to change the final gear ratio to like a (3.something) I'd like to use the monty for long family trips but MPG SUKS!!!!
thanks for in thoughts on this.,

1) Not really. I had a local muffler shop tell me someone is now making tiny aftermarket pre-cats that they could cut and paste in for around $400 but they wouldn't guarantee it would pass smog. But you can get the factory pre-cat at a good discount here: www.mitsubishiparts.com
and the driver's side is pretty easy to replace. Total cost for me was around $600 (my parts were a bit cheaper than your '01) Don 't forget to order the exhaust manifold to cat gasket.
2) I've never heard of this and doubt it could be done without much modification and high chance of failure and/or unhappiness with the finished product. Even if you get an extra 2 mpg (optimisitcally) think how many years it will take you to recover the cost. And then there's the huge hit you'll take in resale value. I'd just enjoy your truck as it is and be happy you didn't buy a Land Rover. My wife's Discovery is doing good to get 13mpg.
